BILLINGHAM TOWN (1) 3 Moore 21, Oakley 61, Hutchinson 78
ESH WINNING (0) 0

Lee Moore scores in the twenty first minute - supporters chant ‘he scores when he wants....or once a year!’ Well not quite! If one said it has taken him the time it takes in between World Cup competitions then you would be closer to the truth! His goal celebration would have been befitting a World Cup winning goal, as it was, the opening strike put Town well on their way to a straightforward victory. Town were at their effervescent best which had been more self evident on the road of late rather than at Bedford Terrace. Esh were valiant in their approach but they had no answer to the vibrancy, the movement and fitness levels that were in abundance amongst those wearing blue shirts. One player stood out amongst a talented group of lads and to some degree, he hasn’t always figured in my reports when he should have done. So often, Jack Connor has instigated play where, two or three individuals later on in the move, the balls in the back of the net. Simply put, I cannot always keep up with play! However, today, it was blatantly obvious Jack was behind goals number two and three and he could have had at least two further assists if the chances had been put away. Yes, a universal team display, but long overdue praise for the domineering central midfielder. The win and performance made perfect preparation for next Friday nights blockbuster at Northallerton Town. You have to feel it’s a make or break fixture for Northallerton because a win for Billingham will almost certainly curtail any chances of promotion with a second position for either them or Thornaby unlikely to be enough under the FA’s confusing guidelines. Town remain eight points clear of Thornaby with a game in hand and fourteen points clear of Northallerton but the Yorkshire club do have a game in hand on Billingham.

In the early exchanges, Town were happy to play patient, possession based football which set the tone for the rest of the game. Esh, happy to chase and harass could never maintain that method for the whole ninety minutes though. Billingham’s patience reaped reward when they went ahead on twenty one minutes. Elliott Beddow’s cross from the right lingered in the air, long enough for Ash Lavan to nod down for MOORE to ghost in behind ‘alas’ Leroy Sane style and place the ball into the bottom corner. Opportunities were opening up for the home side. Dan Flounders intricate through ball allowed Craig Hutchinson to round keeper Tom Orton but a recovering defender cleared off the line to deny the striker another notch to his already impressive tally of thirty one strikes for the season. Lavan was unfortunate to see his low strike cannon back off the post while Mark Dixon’s follow up required two defenders in attendance to keep the scoreline at 1-0. The best move of the half involved Hutchinson, Matty Robinson and ended with Lavan firing wide from the edge of the box.

Town were a tad slow out of the blocks for the next ten minutes of the second half. Esh’s Reece Brown saw his effort deflect off Moore and onto the crossbar, then closely followed by sixteen year old Kieron Dunn’s shot across the goalmouth. That was as good as it got for the plucky visitors. Town soon resumed their dominance. Beddow beat two men on the right but his inward curling shot just missed the target. Orton then had difficulty in picking out the flight of the ball from Joe Hillerby’s drive from twenty yards out. And it came as no surprise to supporters when the second goal did arrive. Connor, who was in omnipresent mode during the second half, hounded out and gained possession, allowing Hutchinson time and space on the right. Hutchinson’s nonchalant cross picked out skipper Stephen OAKLEY to head powerfully into the back of the net. Connor was then unlucky not to have had two assists; Beddow chipped narrowly over and wide, and Hutchinson sent a half volley high and wide. Orton did well to keep out Robinson’s stinging drive but the keeper could do nothing about Town’s third goal. Connor (who else?), sprayed a lovely ball to new signing Joe Carter on the right; Carter side footed across for HUTCHINSON to tap home. In all probability, this was Town’s best home performance since the 3-1 defeat of Thornaby even if the scoreline may suggest otherwise.
