Post subject:  The FA's proposed new restructuring

The long overdue Midlands league at step 3 & 4 is being proposed by the FA. The FA's draft which is in the link proposes that the new structure will start season 2018/19. The interesting point is that at the end of season 2017/18 only the bottom teams will be relegated from step 4. Then 26 teams will promoted from step 5, the usual 14 top applicants from the seperate step 5 leagues & '12' other clubs determined by the LC. They are going to reduce step 4,5 & 6 to 20 clubs per division. So this opens the possibility that several Northern League teams could be promoted in one go. So that the NPL div1 is actually in the north!

Also looks like there maybe a loophole in their wording.says highest placed team that meets the criteria.though does go on to say clubs finishing in top 3.wonder if as a one off they are willing to take highest placed applicant as the promotion spot

How would we get NL1 & NL2 down to 20 teams each? Will they go for 21 & 21 next season then look to get 2 promoted from NL1 that season?

And the WL down to 16 teams?

Twenty six clubs will move from Step 5 to Step 4. Up to fourteen of those will be the champions (or 2nd/ 3rd place side if those above do not or cannot go up). The remaining twelve (minimum) will be at the discretion of the League Committee. I suspect NL clubs would be able to get a disproportionate share of those places if they so wished given the strength of the league and size of attendance some clubs attract. That would likely solve the problem of getting from 22+21 down to 20+20.

The WL could be reduced by promoting the highest placed applicant to the NL & laterally transferring 3 clubs to the Teeside League(which is short of clubs).

They also need to start the Vase at level 4, or clubs from the N/L will not want to move up, apart from the odd one.

If they take the Vase upto level 4 then the North Easts domination of it will end. The Northern League is way stronger than the equivalent leagues at level 5 but I don't think that would apply higher up.

Pretty sure that in very late 80s,early 90s teams in HFS loans league 1st division, and northern league 1st could choose between the two,if I'm wrong clubs in northern league certainly could.god I hope they don't bring step 4 teams into the vase.if we were to be moved up I want bishop well away from the bloody thing.give me the trophy any day

Just checked online.guiseley won the vase and north east counties one year, the following season were in unibond division 1 and lost vase final.in 1992-93 bridlington town(possibly under Colin Richardson)won same league and vase double.I seem to think it stopped around this time

Very true, Hopefully the new Northern Premier League does have a good North Eastern feel about it, If so I can see a good few Northern League clubs grabbing a bone as you nicely put it.
