As the F.C. United Of Qawra friendly seemed to have been cancelled a journalist acquaintance of mine suggested we take in another Hamrun game. People use the phrase “nothing to play for” regularly, but this was definitely appropriate here.
Hamrun rare destined for mid table, Lija are already relegated. Yet this was a much more enjoyable game than last week’s. There were many changes to the Hamrun side ( at least four) and we started encouragingly. Lija were surprisingly good considering their bottom poison ( 5 points from 24 games ) and both sides had opportunities to score.
It was something of a surprise that the half time break came with the score 0-0.
Hamrun scored very soon after the restart, in fact many of the crowd hadn’t retaken their seats Nilsson scored. There could have been a second when Caruana narrowly missed a couple of minutes later.
Lija looked happy to defend in the second half, relying on counter attacks which bore fruit with an equaliser ten minutes from time.
It was interesting , and perhaps rightful, that the player of the match chosen by the sponsors was the Lija goal keeper.
An enjoyable way to spend an evening !
